-Episode one overview:

A demonic seraph soars through a hellish realm as he is chased by Bass, a devil, Lime, a devil/succubus, and Poogie, a morphable blob. The angelic being stole the BEM (Big Eyed Monsters) Jewels. Those are orbs that will react to human emotions. The rouge demon gets past the demonic gate which is in the shadow of the moon. Lime warns Bass of not to lose the jewels, but Bass gets her the old “Okay, Okay, I got it” gripe as he gets focused. When the four escape into the human realm, the loose demon with the jewels blasted by bass. The enemy is defeated and the jewels get scatted across the city.

Lime tells Bass an “I told you so” and to change forms so he wouldn’t scare the humans. He gets frustrated that he can’t win his arguments with words, which Lime ensures him that it doesn’t matter, and transforms into a human who looks like Ranma from Ranma ½. At this point, he falls to the ground below. When he meets the ground he creates a chasm in the middle of a busy road. Lime gets Bass out of the hole with a passed out policeman that fell with him. Soon the lights go out.

Puppet police

After playing the passed out policeman as a puppet, the police leave the blockaded chasm and go patrol a chaotic event that’s dancing in the city. When the police left scene, Bass sasses like a boyfriend that Lime’s default look will stir some attention and is too revealing. Lime puffs and sees a pair of bunny girls skips by to catch them a policeman. When she notices them, she changes her attire into a bunny girl suit. Bass jumps a bit and the trio moves out to look for the closest jewel.

Bunny Dash

In a blacked out department store, people wait for the power to come on until the BEM demon attacks. Our heroes arrive in the same department store to search out the missing jewels; however, the police spot Bass which causes him to run. Lime asks if this is smart to dash away from them. Bass points out that she is doing them same thing, but he has a hard time realizing that both of them are in the wrong. Bass dashes out of the building, breaks through an exit door, rips through a fire escape, and falls from many stories to form a Wile E. Coyote crater in the ally way. In a Ranma ½ and The Slayers fashion, Bass flees away from the huge mob of cops.

Bass finally ditched the fuzz at a park. While hiding in the bushes, Bass talks to a fellow demon as the two reminisce about the days of old. This conversation leads to Bass interrupting a couple as the devil rubs up on the female bystander. Bass notices the lights go out and chases it’s trail. Lime with Poogie catch up to find the monster.

BEM demon Mr Candle

The two figure out who the demon is and lure him into a bridge underpass. Lime and Bass fight it out, but the candle BEM was defeated by Bass’s blaze. One down and five to go. Purse, the innocent BEM demon, watches the fight in the background and gets the idea that demons are meant to do “bad.”

I see Us monsters are ment to do bad

BEM demons

Name: BEM Jewel Monsters
Maturity: 5-7-ish

Production quality:

For 1996 the animation is noticeable from this era; however, the characters look as if they were drawn in a 1993 fashion which is not a bad practice. Know what works and shine it up.
Animation Rating: 3.5/5 (B) Safe and stylish.

I enjoyed the music in the opening and ending songs they remind me of a Megumi Hayashibara album. The opening is Proportion of Heart by Mika Kanai. The ending is Subtle Exquisite Sunday by Samiko Tamagawa. The BGM fits the wackiness and tone for each situation. In the English dub, the narrator sounds like the narrator from the first Care Bears Movie. Awkward to say the least.
Sound Rating: 3.5/5(B)

Overall Production Rating = 3.5/5 (B)

op BEM Lime with offical text

Pros, Cons, and Other Thoughts:

  • Love the interactions between Lime and Bass.
  • I find the humor to be laughable and enjoyable.
  • The music.
  • Not a typical video game OVA or anime adaptation (I have not had much luck with these).

  • The moon’s demon gate is not explained at all or well.
  •  They are some silly and coming of age moments some might not like, but I find it forgivable.
  •  Doesn’t really have an ending. I wish I could…
  • The games were not released in North America or to my knowledge an English specking country to my knowledge. This can be watched without the gaming background but some issues may have a better resolution.

-Other Thoughts:

  • I find these OVA’s to be an enjoyable experience.
  • The relationship between Lime and Bass is similar to Ranma and Akane in Ranma ½ but better.
  • I find the calamity and humor to be similar to these combinations of shows: Ranma ½, The Slayers, Ghost Sweeper Mikami, Gokudo, and Project A-KO.
  • Poogie is just a tool, but he has his moments.

*Pro’s, Con’s, and Other Thoughts Rating: 3.5/5 (B)

Overall ratings:
  • Plot: 3.5/5 (B) Simple and fun.
  • Performance: 3.5/5 (B) Good Dub from both Japanese & English voice actors as they both did a great job portraying the characters.
  • Pace: 3.5/5 (B) It has that middle to late 90’s OVA pace.
  • Characters: 3.5/5 (B) Very relatable to its target audience and will make some older viewers feel young.
  • Production Quality: 3.5/5 (B) Animation: Smooth. Sound: Sparking!!!
  • Pro’s, Con’s, and other thoughts: 3.5/5 (B) It’s an enjoyable experience.
  • Overall total: 3.5/5 (B) Not bad for a video game adaptation OVA.

Note: Due to my own belief and further defining anime as a pop art, no rating will ever receive a 0, 1, or 5 (a Z, F, or A in my book). For this reason is that times will change as opinions. Anything can be far greater or worse than before. That’s just human triumph and error.

Jewel BEM Hunter Lime DVD back

If the re-release doesn’t have the dress up game the fans will throw such a hissy fit.

Extra Feature:

Lime Doll
The dress up game has Lime in four different out fits and she starts out in her underwear. Pretty much click through the clothing styles and Lime will change into that outfit. The only problem is you can’t go back to her in her white bra and panties. This may not even matter to anyone but from a programming stand point you should be able to go back to her default attire.

What was needed?

• This would have been better as a seven-to-eight episode series because I’m hungry for more.
• The game to be released over here translated.
• More people to watch it.

+12 both genders.
The only thing wrong would be some costume chooses and seeing some cleavage. One scene in episode three may elude to be erotic, but you the viewer will feel like Mr. Farley from Three’s Company after this is over with. There are at or less than three bad touch scenes but nothing sexually graphic.

• Ranma ½
• The Slayers
• Ghost Sweeper Mikami
• Gokudo
• Project A-KO

But why is this show getting a re-release?

I normally don’t question this and am always glad to know that a title may get another chance in the store light. Originally, Anime Works had the license and ADV Films was next to purchase the license. ADV Films under went some problems and had to split up into five different companies. Many titles that were going to be release or re-released underwent a license hell period. Some titles like Princess Tutu, Gatchaman, and this title might have not gotten a re-release anytime soon. A title like Indian Summer was on the verge of not getting home released at all, but luckily Sentai Filmworks did rescue it to release on store shelves. If these titles are good or bad, I’ll let you question that for now. I need to go sit in my cozy chair.

The show is now available to own at Right Stuf.
