Whelp it’s been a year now and I have not posted a word.
I’m Donjobo and I collect region 1 DVD, U.S. region A, and older media anime except for Laser Disc.
I’ve gotten into the world of anime since 1992 with Nick Jr. shows like The Littl’ Bits & Grimm’s Fairy Tale Classics also by watching the Fist of the North Star Movie on Sci-fi Channel’s Saturday Anime block which was pretty sweet if you were 2-to-3 year old at the time.
I own approximately 4 big lot’s bookcases of double shelved anime DVDs and it will still grow. At this time my 4th bookcase isn’t built at this time. I’ve been trying to collect since 2004 but it got better in 2008. These pictures were taken in my Man Cave.
How I collect is to find a series, know what format it’s in, know what options it has to completely own the series (singles, singles box, lite box, thin pack, etc.), and shop around. If one does go in to this sort of hobby like I have, they will get interested in how the Japanese creators came up with the series what struggles the creative cast had to go through to complete this series if you’re lucky. Most of the time I’ve learned about the licensing got into the US and what changes some series went through.
The two questions I get asked are (a) “Why not just own what you like?” and (b) “Why not torrent?”
(a) While knowing what I like, I want to know what is out there. What series I’ve watched may not be what a newer, older, or current generation has seen and I want to relate and talk with others about a series that they have seen and subtly introduce them to other series that they haven’t seen. Some are bad-some are good-some are classics-some are obscure, adventuring into these unknowns are more fascinating to me instead of watching a show for the 30th time this year.
(b) If I own something I want to slap the other person with what I got. Also owning the real thing kind has a place mark on where my life was and where I’m at now since I always wanted a private anime library of my own to walk through.
Unlike other collectors I typically just want the series in its entirety and the media to work. I’m fine with 420p and above quality, but I really can’t tell the difference between 720p and 1080p for it to matter. That’s why you see more DVDs than BLU-RAYs.
Please let me know about your thoughts and what other things that you collect below.
Also feel free to ask about what else I own. I will show it and might add a review as well.
**If you see doubles there might be a story behind it.
Update: Also for you other Otaku collectors ad enjoyers out there I also enjoy seeing other peoples collections at The League of Extraordinary Spenders (Or L.E.S.) Facebook page. Come on and join the fun. Link below the pics.
